Program Summary
Designed in conjunction with members of the Harvard Department of Mathematics and the University of Chicago SESAME program, the program was created specifically for teachers of middle and high school mathematics. Harvard University believes that teachers with a solid foundation in mathematics are most capable of communicating the essentials, guiding students around mathematical pitfalls and avoiding potential misunderstandings.
Teachers become students themselves, delving into the fundamentals of mathematics and examining different teaching styles. The best math teachers combine a passion for teaching math with a thorough knowledge of mathematics. This Master of Liberal Arts math teaching degree helps the teacher work on both aspects of this equation by revisiting familiar topics from a sophisticated point of view.

Program Requirements
To earn a master’s degree in Mathematics for Teaching, the following requirements need to be met:
Complete the requirements for the Capstone track(48 credits):

Calculus B and differential equations (MATH E16)

At least three mathematical theory courses

At least one pedagogy and lesson study course

Six electives

A capstone course, MATH E599 Teaching Projects: Math for Teaching Capstone Course comprises three modules that emphasize topics relevant to middle school and high school math teachers (only offered on campus)
Take at least four oncampus only courses.
The residency requirement may be completed during the summer at Harvard Summer School. The Summer School typically offers intensive threeweek mathematics for teaching courses.
Take all courses for graduate credit.
All courses must be taken for graduate credit. Most classes will be taken by distance learning, but a residency requirement does apply.
Maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.
A grade of a B or higher is required on each course taken. Courses earned with grades below a B do not fulfill degree requirements, but do count toward the cumulative GPA.
Complete all requirements within three years.
The threeyear timeframe begins with the first course taken. If unable to complete the degree within three years, the student will be retired from the program.
Capstone Course
The Capstone Course MATH E599 Teaching Projects: Math for Teaching Capstone Course, comprises three modules that emphasize topics relevant to middle and high school math teachers.

The Capstone Course MATH E599 Teaching Projects: Math for Teaching Capstone Course, comprises three modules that emphasize topics relevant to middle and high school math teachers.

During the semester, participants will each lead an alternative math teaching experiment. For this experiment the student is given a chance to teach a lesson incorporating a teaching style, a topic, or a technology that the student has never worked with before. The experiment will be presented to the class, and the student will receive feedback.

In the final module, the student applies the knowledge gained in the program to investigate how a particular technology can be used to support a classroom math lesson.
